about this event

The Edmonton site of Alberta's annual province wide game jam event, uniting game developers throughout the province!

Are you a current or aspiring game developer in Alberta? Are you looking for a way to connect with other developers in our community, learn new skills, or experiment with cool ideas? Join us on September 25th - 27th in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and remote for the seventh annual Alberta Game Jam!

Alberta Game Jam is Alberta's largest game jam event, seeking to unite and empower developers throughout our province. Whether you're a seasoned developer already working in the industry or a novice looking to get started, game jams are an excellent way to get connected to your peers, flex your creative muscles, and gain experience! If you're new to game development, game jams are also a great way to learn the ins-and-outs of the process and start building up pieces for your portfolio.

Note: This Eventbrite page is specifically for the Edmonton site located at Edmonton Unlimited. Please visit the Calgary or Lethbridge ticket pages if you plan on participating at these sites. If you are interested in participating remotely, please visit the Remote Participation page. Please note that the Edmonton site is unable to take cash at the door. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time on Eventbrite. Join the Alberta Game Jam Discord!

How It Works: The goal of Alberta Game Jam is to create a game in 48 hours within a multidisciplinary team according to a Secret Theme that will be announced at the beginning of the event. After the theme is revealed, participants will be able to mingle with each other and form teams before starting to work on their game. (Think of it like a hack-a-thon, but focused on game development!) Teams may choose to make digital or board games so long as it adheres to the theme in some way. At the end of the 48 hour period each team presents their game and shares their experiences as well as what they learned throughout the jam. Alberta Game Jam starts promptly at 6 pm on Friday, September 25th and ends at 6 pm Sunday, September 27th. Your game must be uploaded to the Alberta Game Jam 2026 Itch.io page by 6 pm. Presentations start promptly at 6 pm, and then we all go home and sleep!

Equipment: Participants are responsible for bringing and providing their own equipment to work on (laptops, desktops, monitors, tablets, etc.) Workstations with tables and chairs, wifi, and power will be provided, though depending on the needs of your set-up, we recommend you bring an extra power bar if you require several outlets. Participants are responsible for their equipment, though there will be 24 hour security on-site. In addition to the equipment you need to work, we also recommend that you bring a water bottle and anything you need to work comfortably—your favourite snacks, blanket, pillows, rubber duck, etc. If you require help loading in or loading out your equipment, we have volunteers on-site who can help! Join the Alberta Game Jam Discord and ping @EdmontonVolunteer in the #Edmonton channel for help, and a volunteer will be sent to come and help you.

Site Amenities: Your $20 ticket reserves you a spot and helps to cover the venue costs associated with hosting the event. Dinner will be provided on Friday and Saturday and there will be free coffee available on site. You are encouraged to bring snacks as well as whatever you need to feel comfortable. For those who are traveling from the event or if you just need a quiet space to rest, a dark, quiet room is available.

Hours of Operation Friday: 5:30 PM: Registration Opens, 6:00 PM: Orientation, 6:30 PM: Theme reveal, 7:00 PM: Team Formation, 7:30 PM: Dinner Saturday: 6:00 PM: Dinner Sunday: 5 PM: Closing Presentations, Registration Deadline, 6 PM: Submissions Deadline, 6 PM - 7 PM: Closing Presentations, 7 PM: Tear down

Security: There will be 24 hour security in the Edmonton Unlimited building throughout the weekend. While you are in the building, you must have your Participant Badge on at all times as this will help security and the event organizers and volunteers know that you are supposed to be there. If you leave the building and then come back, security will ask to see your badge and will check your name against the list of participants.

Volunteering: Volunteer Form. We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to help out with set up and tear down for the event. Volunteers will be selected based on their availability and past experience with our game jams. You will be notified by Sept. 13 whether or not you have been selected as a volunteer for this event. Please reach out to @Jon Blackley on Discord if you have any questions about the Edmonton Site!
